TUBES + TUNNELS | Tempura Paint on Craft Roll Paper | Future engineers attend EarlystART! In this art activity, students explored cardboard tubes and how art and building can come together to create an unconventional masterpiece.

FISH COLLAGE: THE WATER STUDY | Watercolor and Glue on Poster Board | Students learned about the various underwater creatures that live in the deep blue. Working collaboratively, they created an abstract collage of what they imagined fish look like underwater.

COLLABROATIVE MOSAIC | Tumbled Glass and Adhesive on Wood | Resident artist, Krista Story and our pre-K students created this exquisite piece of art by carefully placing each shape, while practicing fine motor skills and color recognition.

SPRING MURAL: SPRING STUDY | Spring Study Tempera Paint on Butcher Paper, Dry Mounted | Spring Study was created by students to conclude their project work and to summarize their learning experiences about spring in their classrooms.

SCRIBBLE SPECTACULAR | Acrylic Paint, Tempera Paint, Oil Pastel on Plywood | Children need movement and stimulation! All students were invited to participate in mark making on these pieces of wood. There were no instructions given, just materials available for children to use while they got to know each other and familiarize themselves with the variety of materials that are in the art studio. Children scribbled away to create this large scale masterpiece.

PINATAS | Tissue Paper on Cardboard | Students worked collaboratively to create piñatas to celebrate a successful school year.

PENDULUM PAINTING | Tempura Paint on Craft Roll Paper | Students played and experimented with pendulum painting, a mark making technique that paints the paper below in an elliptical pattern using physics. Students learned about motion and gravity by exchanging their paintbrush for a swinging cup.

MUSIC + PIZZA | Tempura Paint on Paper | EarlystART classrooms use a Project Approach to lead students through child-led discovery and intentional play-based learning. This collaborative mural depicts favorite subjects and honors these artists as individuals and as members of a classroom family.

ART IS THE HEART | Tempura Paint on Paper | Art is the heart of our curriculum at EarlystART. In this collaborative mural, students expressed love for music and working with each other to create something beautiful.

BEADS | Polymer Clay | Art isn’t just for students! Adults need creative breaks too. For this project, teachers were invited to create beads students could use for their special projects.

BROWN IS BEAUTIFUL | Tempura Paint on Craft Roll Paper | During this color exploration, students experimented intentionally with hues of brown. The project was an invitation for children to celebrate the beauty in the color brown and the beauty in the variations of their own skin.

CATERPILLAR COLLAGE | Calendar Images and Glue | Upon reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” in spring, students learned about caterpillars, butterflies, and their life cycle. Their magical metamorphosis inspired this large scale collaborative collage.

MANIPULATIVE PLAY | Loose Parts | Little learners love exploring. Manipulatives in the art studio help students distinguish between weight, height, length, shape, and size of objects as they sort. They explore patterns through sequencing, ordering, comparison, colors, and textures. At EarlystART, we believe children should learn through play!

THREE-DIMENSIONAL HEADS THE HAIR STUDY | Chenille Stems and Styrofoam | Students studied hair and explored various hair styles, textures, and colors relating to culture and identity. This project invited students to celebrate diversity through open-ended art play.

STICKY PAINTINGS | Polymer Clay on Canvas | These sticky paintings were created out of improvisation and child-led interest. Children explored new textures of clay and transferred them to canvas.

RAINBOW FISH | Oil Pastel, Liquid Watercolor, and Mixed Media on Poster Board | Two students selected to participate in our Child-Centered Creativity (C3) program, an arts enrichment program designed for students with specific social-emotional needs or challenges, were inspired by the classroom Beta fish. Upon reading “Rainbow Fish” and taking turns, these artists collaborated peacefully to create their very own rainbow fish.

MS. MATRIKA | Oil Pastel, Tissue Paper, Watercolor on Posterboard | Through process-based art practices, children worked together to honor and create this image of one of our teachers, Ms. Matrika.

HOPES + DREAMS CHANDELIER | Acrylic Paint on Canvas and Polymer Clay Beading on Wire | Caregivers annually write their hopes and dreams for their children on a strip of canvas. Students paint the canvas and make the accessories. This collaborative installation brings families, children, and educators together to celebrate what the upcoming school year will bring.

MILKSHAKES + DONUTS | Sand, Liquid Elmer’s Glue, Collage Materials, Aquarium Gravel in Plastic Cups | These sweet treats were created just for fun! Children were enjoying dumping and pouring sand, and we were making a lot of pretend smoothies in our sensory area, so the sand milkshake was born!

STICKY TOWN | Recyclable Materials, Mixed Media Assemblage | Students enjoyed digging through recycled treasures and arranging them, playing with them, and adhering them to each other and this board. They enhanced their ability to think critically while arranging, stacking, and experimenting with size, balance, and weight, while promoting creativity. Loose parts require a great deal of imagination to become other things – like towns!

ALCOHOL INK MOSAIC | Ceramic Tiles, Sharpie Marker, Pipettes | Our littlest learners explored color on ceramic tile with resident artist, Krista Story. Students used fine motor skills to use the pipettes to experiment with the resist technique, using a special (and safe!) solution of rubbing alcohol and water that repelled the colors from the ink.

GRADUATION SELF-PORTRAITS | Acrylic Paint on Construction Paper | Each self-portrait was created individually be pre-K graduates to celebrate their time at EarlystART and what they imagine for their futures.

BUG BACKPACKS | Paint on Cardboard | Wearable bug backpacks were created collaboratively by resident artist, Alex Espy, students, and families. Children wore these on the lawn of the Nelson Atkins Art Museum for their annual picnic, while gaining exposure to the artistic community in Kansas City.

MIXED MEDIA MOBILE SCULPTURES | Cardboard, Tissue Paper, Cardstock, Paint, Crayons, Feathers, Pipe Cleaners, and Paper Towel Rolls | Mr. Alex Espy, resident artist with Messner Puppet Theatre, created these wonderful puppet sculptures with children for interactive arts experiences.

PRINTMAKING DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH | Ink on Cardstock | Students learned about Black artist, Emory Douglas by creating their own relief prints, inspired by his work during the Civil Rights Movement.

BUTTERFLY DAYS OF SPRING | Tempura Paint on Paper | Upon reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” in spring, students learned about caterpillars, butterflies, and their life cycle. They studied their habits and bodies to inspire this large scale collaborative painting of a butterfly.

CATERPILLAR SCULPTURES | Model Magic and Mixed Media | Students created three dimensional representations of what caterpillars looked like before metamorphosis to butterflies.

FALL MURAL | Tempera Paint on Butcher Paper, Dry Mounted | This fall-inspired mural was created by students to conclude their project work and to summarize their learning experiences about fall in their classrooms.

LOVE ROBOTS | Acrylic Paint on Cardboard | Upon reading “Love Robot”, robots were created in our “installation corner”. Children were invited to create collaboratively using large scale loose parts. Each classroom created their own robot and utilized them as boxes to collect kindness cards from parents wishing them well throughout the day.

CELEBRATION OF US | Chalk Paint Marker on Laminated Portraits | Children celebrated themselves and what makes everyone special in self-portraits using chalk makers on laminated photos.

They enhanced their ability to think critically while arranging, stacking, and experimenting with size, balance, and weight, while promoting creativity. XYLOPHONES AND BOOMWHACKERS | Students explored music and color matching by creating their own musical instruments. Each pitch was paired with a color for children to identify and play simple melodies. Different colors correspond to different notes.
